Elitism Vindicated

In the past year, I have become (brace yourself) a Yarnie. I have no shame in this. It may seem a bit snobbish, rather like claiming to only watch PBS if watching television, but actually, it's purely sybaritic. Running your fingers over a skein of acrylic just ain't the same as stroking baby alpaca.

To make this effete affectation more acceptable, it has been officially declared as politically and ecologically correct by no less than the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

2009 has been declared the International Year of Natural Fibers. Check out the web site; it's good looking, comes in six different languages and is very educational.

I am a recent convert as well, thanks to you. Even so I am regressing a bit despite your warning about "fun fur". It was extremely difficult to work with but 2 hats and a scarf later I still have more to go. Friends with medically induced hair loss are sadly abundant lately. The chemo hats are a soft and welcome alternative to a wig. I hope the good people that approved 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers will forgive me the transgression.

Synthetics definitely have their place, and chemo caps are one of the most noble. You are a good person, knitting for a good cause. (I can't believe how fast you knit!)

While I was in the oncology ward three weeks ago (because there were no other beds available at the time, even there at Stanford) I saw one patient with a handknit chemo cap, and I wondered who had made it for her and was so glad for her that they had.

Ooohh... I'm with ya! I can't knit anything more challenging than a straight line. But I skied in that hat you made me yesterday. And got loads of compliments. Plus, it stayed dry! On a huge powder day! How do you do it???
